Chicagoan Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) founded Roots Music Rambler as a music and travel blog in a pre-pandemic world. COVID killed events and travel plus her desire to play her banjo. Falls texted her in 2023 and said, 'Let's bring it back as a podcast!' He was raised on John Prine, babysat on Waylon Jennings and taught to drink and cuss the proper, mountain way. He hails from Pikeville, Ky., the birthplace of Dwight Yoakum, whose annual festival is Hillbilly Days.

Different record producers approach the process differently

A new episode of Roots Music Rambler drops Friday. This week, we visit with @lalalandaplace record producer and engineer @annegthr to talk about the art and science of producing records. We asked her about the different approaches producers have, ranging from the vibe and environment approach like Rick Rubin, versus other more technical methods.

Hear the full episode and get updates on recent guest’s successes, plus Frank and Falls’s weekly Pickin’ the Grinnin’ segment of new music recommendations. Listen at rootsmusicrambler.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

FULL EPISODE – Inside Producing Records with LaLaLand Sound’s Anne Gauthier

We’re taking a bit of a diversion from the typical artist interview this week on Roots Music Rambler with a special guest. Anne Gauthier is the primary producer and engineer behind the great sounds and recordings that come out of La La Land Sound in Louisville, Ky. She has produced, mixed and recorded with artists like Bonnie Prince Billy, Murder by Death, Joan Shelley and more. She has also contributed to records by Ray Lamontagne, Jake Shears and White Reaper.

One of her career highlights was also working with legendary producer Glyn Johns (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin). We asked her about that, how she came to be a record producer and where La La Land Sound fits in the musical landscape. Anne also shared some of her thoughts on production approaches and equipment, the use of A.I. in record production and more.

Frank and Falls also caught us up on the latest from Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heatherns whose America’s Got Talent quest was cut short. They also give a quick update on several past Roots Music Rambler guests and share their pics for new music recommendations in the Pickin’ the Grinnin’ segment.

Joe Cox of the Applachian Heatherns started in Marching Band

We had such a fun conversation this week on Roots Music Rambler! @bill_taylor_music and the Appalachian Heatherns (Bill and drummer Joe Cox) joined us and explained their @agt audition virality, what it’s meant for the near and distant future for the band, how they came to be and a lot more.

Cox told us he started playing in the high school marching band which is where his first exposure to playing live in front of an audience was. Now he’s playing for a band on one of the most popular television shows on the planet!

Are Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heatherns aliens? We asked!

This week on Roots Music Rambler, we talked to @bill_taylor_music and the Appalachian Heatherns (or at least Bill and drummer Joe Cox). We dug into everything from exploding on the national scene with their @agt audition to what’s next in that show’s process and from musical influencers to a new album.

The band hails from Middlesboro, Kentucky, which is built on the impact zone of an ancient meteor crater. Naturally, we asked Bill and Joe if they were, in fact, aliens. Joe’s answer cracked us up.

RMR Bill Taylor Segment 2 Final

Bill Taylor and Joe Cox from Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heatherns joined us on Roots Music Rambler this week to talk everything from America’s Got Talent to Pentecostal singing to marching bands.

In this segment, we dove into each member’s roots in music and got a nice surprise announcement that the band plans to drop its first full album by year’s end.

The Heatherns had a successful audition on AGT in June, gaining a standing ovation from Simon Cowell and crew after Taylor’s bluegrass and countrified version of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” The Facebook video of the audition alone stands at over 11 million views.
